This page was last updated on 4 February 2008. Here is an excerpt from Dad Wears Combat Boots: Dad went to Basic Training. When he got there he was given all Army clothes to wear. The Army also gave him lots of equipment to take care of. What kind of things did your dad get? Sometimes they trained in buildings. Sometimes they stayed outside in the woods. They called that going to the field. Sometimes they trained in a desert! When they were training in the field they worked, slept, and ate in tents. Some tents were called General Purpose Mediums. Others were called General Purpose Smalls. Real small ones were called "pup" tents. What kind of tent did your dad sleep in? They didn’t have bathrooms like in a house— instead they used what was called latrines in the woods. They were like old-fashioned out-houses. Did your dad ever use a latrine? Sometimes they traveled in trucks, sometimes in jeeps. Sometimes they flew in big airplanes, sometimes in helicopters. How did your dad travel?
